Firm secures a $2 million verdict in 2021 car crash

Officials from the Mike Morse Law Firm, Michigan’s largest personal injury law firm, recently announced a $2 million verdict awarded to a client severely injured in a 2021 automobile accident. The verdict is seven times larger than the settlement figure offered by the defendant’s insurance company, Auto-Owners Insurance, according to firm founder Mike Morse.

Morse, along with attorneys Paul Wheatley and Chris Filiatraut, represented John Hoye, now a resident of Rowlett, Texas, who was 28 years old when he was severely injured in an auto accident in White Lake Township. Hoye was in the driver’s seat of a Chevrolet HHR stopped at a stop sign waiting to pull onto M-59, when a negligent driver in a SUV veered off of M-59 at a high rate of speed and slammed into the driver’s side of the HHR.  The driver claimed a sudden emergency defense, alleging he blacked out just before the crash.  Hoye’s attorneys looked into the driver’s medical background, and discovered he had actually passed out and caused a crash earlier that summer. In addition, the driver had blacked out in his own home just four days before the crash that injured Hoye, they noted.

Prior to the accident, Hoye, father to one young son, enjoyed tending to and riding horses, and training in Muay Thai fighting, with hopes of one day becoming an amateur competitive fighter. Those dreams were dashed with the accident, where Hoye suffered fractures of his pelvis, hip, femur, sternum, rib and neck, as well as sustaining a traumatic brain injury. Due to the extensive bodily injuries incurred, Hoye will forever walk with the assistance of a cane, and still requires future surgeries, including a left hip replacement.

In response to his life-altering injuries, the defendant’s insurance company offered Hoye a suggested settlement of $275,000.  Following a four-day trial in Oakland County Circuit Court, nearly a year-and-a-half after his accident, the jury found in Hoye’s favor, awarding him $2 million in compensation.

“No amount of money can replace what John lost in this terrible crash, including his ability to enjoy the activities he once loved,” said Morse. “We do know, though, that financial security is a critical part of being able to rebuild a life following a transformative accident like this. If we can help ensure that John and his family have the finances they need to support them through this challenging new normal, we have done our part, and we look forward to his continued healing.”

To date, Mike Morse Law Firm has won more than $1 billion for its clients over the past three decades.
