Man pleads no contest in murder of WWJ news anchor

Thursday, Arthur Williamson, a 55 year-old Pontiac man pleaded no contest in Macomb County Circuit Court for attacking James Nicolai, also known as WWJ-AM news anchor Jim Matthews, Nicolai’s girlfriend, and their two children.

On September 23, 2022, Williamson tied up Nicolia’s girlfriend and her two young children.  When James Nicolai came home, Williamson struck him in the head multiple times with a hammer killing him.  Williamson also struck Nicolia’s 10 year old boy in the head with the hammer.

Williamson pled no contest to first degree premeditated murder (life felony), two counts of assault with intent to murder (up to life felony) and three counts of unlawful imprisonment (15 year felony) as a habitual fourth offender which guarantees a mandatory 25 year sentence for the assault and unlawful imprisonment charges.  Assistant Prosecutor Steve Fox agreed to not add any additional charges from this incident as part of Williamson’s no contest plea.

Williamson will be sentenced on Wednesday, May 31, at 9:30 am in front of Chief Judge James Biernat Jr.

“I would like to thank the Chesterfield Police Department for their diligent work in investigating this case and everyone who helped in getting accountability for this family and the start of closure," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
