Judge sentences man to 40-60 years in prison

On Tuesday, Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Diane Druzinski sentenced Jason Brilla, 34 years old, on his Friday, March 24, guilty convictions. Assistant Prosecutor Steve Fox conducted the trial and the jury found Brilla guilty on all charges.

On May 2, 2022, Warren Police Officers attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Brilla. Brilla fled at a high rate of speed with a passenger in the car. After running a red light, he crashed into another vehicle. Brilla fled from the vehicle on foot but was apprehended by police officers. The passenger of Brilla’s vehicle, Jennel Castro, was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead.

The jury convicted Brilla of murder in the second degree (life felony) for killing his vehicle passenger, Jennel Castro, fleeing a police officer in the first degree (15 year felony,) operating a motor vehicle on suspended license causing death (15 year felony) and assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer (2 year felony.)

Druzinski sentenced Brilla to 40-60 years for his second degree murder conviction. On the fleeing a police officer in the first degree and operating a motor vehicle on suspended license causing death convictions he was sentenced to 5-15 years each and on the assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer conviction the judge sentenced him to 1-2 years. The sentences are concurrent. Brilla will serve his sentence in the Michigan Department of Corrections.

“Thank you to the Warren Police Department for their efforts in attempting to save the victim as well as their investigation, the Macomb County jury who convicted Brilla and Circuit Court Judge Diane Druzinski for sentencing him. I hope the family can start the healing and closure processes after this terrible incident,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
