American Law Institute Continuing Legal Education will present a webcast on “Depression in Legal Practice: Stigmas, Symptoms, and Strategies” on Thursday, June 22, from 2 to 3 p.m.
Substance use and mental health disorders—especially depression—are alarmingly prevalent in legal professionals, with far-reaching impacts. With at least 1 in 5 attorneys suffering from Major Depressive Disorder, the illness can have devastating personal and professional repercussions that can also carry over to clients, partners, and other staff.
This program dispels the stigma associated with mental health—one of the major roadblocks to legal professionals reaching out for help. It provides a comprehensive overview of risk factors and symptoms of depression, why attorneys are particularly vulnerable, compelling reasons for seeking help, and intervention strategies for attorneys with colleagues in need of support. It also explores what attorneys can do now to improve their own happiness and well-being and boost resilience during challenging times.
Laurie J. Besden, executive director, Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers of Pennsylvania, will help attendees to:
• Recognize that the stigma associated with mental health disorders is simply an illusion.
• Identify the prevalence of substance use and/or mental health disorder in the legal profession.
• Detect when a colleague may have a problem.
• Understand why attorneys don’t seek help—but should.
• Appreciate that substance use and mental health disorders are chronic, progressive, and potentially fatal—but with high recovery rates with treatment.
• Utilize the free resources that are available throughout the U.S.
Cost for the webcast is $99. To register, visit www.ali-cle.org.
