As my term as Oakland County Bar Association president is coming to an end, I find myself reflecting on what the OCBA means to me and its impact on my life, both personally and professionally. As a very young lawyer, I moved from Chicago back to Birmingham, where I’d grown up. I was a single mother of two girls, the elder about to start kindergarten. Within my first month at my new job in the summer of 2000, I joined the OCBA. Without question, it was one of the best professional decisions I made. As a tremendous added bonus, it was an excellent personal decision, too.
Being engaged in the OCBA and all it has to offer most definitely requires time and commitment. It’s worth every minute. It is the best opportunity to give and to get; to learn from and mentor colleagues; and to support and laugh with other members, many of whom become your closest friends. Within that first month at my new job in Michigan, one of the partners with whom I worked told me the best thing I could do was to be active in the OCBA.
I listened, and she was right. I went to seminars and social events, joined a committee, and started in the Inns of Court as an associate. Soon thereafter, I was speaking at seminars, leading a committee, and serving as a master with the Inns of Court. Eventually, I ran for and was elected to the OCBA board of directors. After years of service, I had the privilege of serving as the president.
I am fortunate to have 23 years of memories and even more fortunate to know that despite the fact that my role with the OCBA board is coming to an end, the OCBA will still be a part of my professional life from which I get more than I give. And, better yet, I have friends to cherish and more friendships to forge.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve, and thank you for being my friends.
