Commissioner honored with namesake park in Madison Heights

Oakland County Commissioner Gary R. McGillivray (D-Madison Heights) was honored Monday night as Twelve-Sherry Park, located on 12 Mile Road between Campbell and Stephenson roads, was renamed “McGillivray Park” during a special ceremony. McGillivray, who was mayor of Madison Heights from 1998 to 1999, has long been an advocate for Madison Heights, serving on its city council from 1983-1998 and 2001-2008. He has represented Madison Heights as a county commissioner since 2009.

“I'm very honored to receive this recognition from the city,” McGillivray said. “Parks and staying involved in the City of Madison Heights are a passion of mine, and I am humbled that McGillivray Park will serve as a place for everyone to enjoy the outdoors.”

McGillivray is chair of the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission and was a member of the Madison Heights Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee for 25 years. He has also
served as a member of the Madison Heights Little Baseball Board of Directors and as the chair of the Madison Heights Planning Commission.

In addition to a baseball diamond, Twelve-Sherry Park features a basketball court, ice rink, playground, tennis court and more. The Oakland County Parks and Recreation Department will also be dedicating a play area in McGillivray’s honor at Ambassador Park in Madison Heights.

As county commissioner for District 3, McGillivray represents the cities of Madison Heights, Hazel Park and a portion of the City of Troy on the Oakland County Board of Commissioners. He worked for the Daily Tribune and Macomb Daily in the circulation department for 29 years and studied law enforcement at Oakland Community College.
