The American Bar Association Commission on Domestic and Sexual Violence will host its third Write and Tell Live, a livestream conversation with authors.
Judith Herman, the author of “Truth and Repair: How Trauma Survivors Envision Justice,” will have a conversation about her new book with Marium Durrani, vice president of policy at the National Domestic Violence Hotline and commission liaison. Herman’s work for more than 50 years as a psychiatrist has focused on helping survivors of gender-based violence.
The Write and Tell Live with Judith Herman will take place Monday, August 21, at 2 p.m. livestreamed on Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Twitter. The public can register on the commission’s Facebook or LinkedIn sites, or receive a reminder about the program on YouTube.
In her new book, Herman seeks to answer the vital questions:
• How do we fix the system for survivors of sexual trauma?
• How do we repair the world for the survivors themselves?
“Dr. Judith Herman is a trailblazer in the field of trauma and recovery, and a leader in discussing the trauma caused by gender-based violence,” said Maricarmen Garza, chair of the commission. “This conversation will raise up the stories of survivors who have engaged with legal systems to better understand how justice is personal and individual, and what this means for responding to gender-based violence.”
Garza said the commission’s Write & Tell Live series is about the power of storytelling for attorneys and the clients that they represent.
Co-sponsors for the event are the Section of Family Law, Commission on Women in the Profession, Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice, Commission on Homelessness and Poverty, Criminal Justice Section, Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defense, Center for Pro Bono and the Young Lawyers Division.
The ABA Commission on Domestic and Sexual Violence works to increase access to justice for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking by mobilizing the legal profession. For additional information, visit www.americanbar.org/groups/domestic_violence.
