Michigan State Rep. Nate Shannon (D-Sterling Heights) introduced House Bill 5046 on Wednesday. This legislation would give Michigan court reporters a raise for the first time in almost 40 years.
“Court reporters and recorders are an essential part of the judicial system. Those who work day in and day out in these positions must be compensated accordingly,” Shannon said. “Not only will my bill provide fair pay, but it helps Michigan compete for and retain talent.”
Court reporters and recorders transcribe court hearings for use in both civil or criminal court cases. A reporter is a shorthand reporter, or a voice writer. A court recorder transcribes electronically. Michigan’s transcript rates are one of the lowest in the nation.
This legislation would increase the amount a recorder or reporter would receive from $1.75 to $3.75 per page on original transcript and 90 cents per page for each copy. Legislation to change circuit court reporter pricing has not been implemented since 1986.
“I am proud to introduce this legislation,” Shannon continued. “The Legislature is responsible for adjusting court reporter and recorder rates, and with the many changes in the economy, this policy is long past due.”
