The Michigan Supreme Court is looking for volunteer docents to guide school groups and other visitors through its 3,800-square-foot Learning Center, located on the first floor of the Hall of Justice in Lansing. Activities and exhibits at the Learning Center reflect the Supreme Court's commitment to increasing access and educating the public about the third branch of government. Interested individuals are encouraged to attend an Open House on Wednesday, September 27, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Hall of Justice. To register, call and leave a message at 517-373-7171.
"Learning Center docents are vital to our mission of educating the public because they serve as ambassadors for the judicial branch," explained Justice Richard H. Bernstein, the MSC liaison to the Learning Center. "We pride ourselves on bringing in volunteers who are enthusiastic, passionate about learning, and committed to connecting with people of all ages and abilities."
Volunteer docent responsibilities include leading interactive activities and demonstrating hands-on exhibits at the center, including a virtual courtroom, as well as assisting at special events such as Law Day and Constitution Day. Legal and educational experience is not necessary for applicants.
The Learning Center is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tours are free, and typically last 6090 minutes; reservations are required. The Learning Center offers online resources for educators and students, including lesson plans, educational games, and a free e-newsletter.
