Court announces new appointment opportunities on court-related groups

The Michigan Supreme Court has opened its application period for appointments to the following groups: the Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Michigan Judiciary (one vacancy); the Committee on Model Criminal Jury Instructions (four vacancies); and the Michigan Judicial Council (one vacancy). Interested individuals must apply by October 29.

The Supreme Court is responsible for appointing, or recommending for appointment, individuals to various court-related groups as needed. Applicants should carefully read the announcements, as each group has its own specific criteria for membership and might have different application instructions. Also, submitting an application does not guarantee appointment.

Background on these groups:

• Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Michigan Judiciary The main goal of the Commission is to develop policies and standards that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the courts. The Commission is comprised of an interdisciplinary, wide range of stakeholders led by Justice Elizabeth M. Welch and Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Cynthia Stephens (ret.) as co-chairs. To apply for this vacancy, applicants must be an active member of the Michigan Court Administration Association. The online application can be completed at https://forms.office.com/g/iJPH4mssJ3. Anyone unable to access the online application or e-mail applicant materials should contact Emilie Tarsin at TarsinE@courts.mi.gov or 517-373-1903.

• Committee on Model Criminal Jury Instructions The Michigan Supreme Court created the Committee on Model Criminal Jury Instructions by administrative order in 2014. The Committee is composed of attorneys and judges whose duty it is to ensure that the criminal jury instructions accurately inform jurors about the legal process in which they will participate and the law that they are to apply in an understandable, conversational, and unbiased manner. To apply, e-mail résumé or CV in Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF format to jobapps@courts.mi.gov and include "M Crim JI Committee Member" in the subject line. Anyone unable to e-mail applicant materials should contact the Office of Administrative Counsel at 517-373-1239 for assistance.

• Michigan Judicial Council The Council was created to develop and implement a statewide judicial strategic plan among a wide group of stakeholders. The plan will apply a unified vision for the future, build agreement around priorities, develop innovative and comprehensive strategies for making system-wide improvements, and coordinate many innovations resulting from recent reforms. To apply for this vacancy, applicants must currently be employed as a court administrator, probate register, or juvenile register in a Michigan trial court.
