Ypsilanti trooper Benjamin Sonstrom receives 'Lifesaving Award' from MSP

Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Col. Peter Munoz recently announced that Trooper Benjamin Sonstrom of the Ypsilanti Post is the recipient of the MSP Lifesaving Award. On Feb. 3, 2009, Sonstrom responded to a residence where it was reported a female was unresponsive. Upon arrival, he found an unconscious woman who had no pulse and was not breathing. Sonstrom relieved the woman's son, who was attempting to perform CPR, and began administering first aid. Thanks to his efforts, the woman's condition improved by the time emergency medical personnel arrived. Upon reviewing the circumstances of this incident, the MSP Board of Awards concluded Sonstrom's quick actions and knowledge of first aid techniques helped extend the woman's life. Sonstrom enlisted with the department in 2008, graduating as a member of the 121st Trooper Recruit School. He received the Outstanding Performance Award in his graduating class. After graduation he was assigned to the Ypsilanti Post. Published: Fri, Jan 29, 2010
