Holder to speak at FBA McCree Award lunch, Feb. 17

The Federal Bar Association Eastern District of Michigan Chapter will host its annual Wade Hampton McCree Award Luncheon on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 11:30 a.m. at the Atheneum Hotel. The award, honoring significant contributions to the advancement of social justice, will be conferred upon Kathleen Straus, president of the Michigan State Board of Education. Straus was first elected to the State Board of Education in November 1992, and re-elected in November 2000, and November 2008. Straus has committed the majority of her life to the furthering of public education and community services in Michigan. Until her retirement in 1991, Straus was president of the Center for Creative Studies, a nationally recognized arts education institution in Detroit. Prior to that, she was director of government relations for the Michigan Association of School Boards, and served as staff director of the Education Committee of the Michigan Senate. Strauss was the executive director of PRO Detroit (People and Responsible Organizations for Detroit), a community-wide coalition of business, labor, civic groups, and schools established to assure that court-ordered desegregation would be implemented smoothly and peacefully. She has been elected to the Hall of Fame of Hunter College, and the Michigan Education Hall of Fame in 1994. She received the "Distinguished Warrior" Award from the Detroit Urban League in March of 2000. She was inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame in October 2000. In 2004 she was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Anti Defamation League. The luncheon keynote speaker will be U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. who was sworn in as the 82nd attorney general of the United States, and the first African-American, on February 3, 2009 by Vice President Joe Biden. In 1997, Mr. Holder was named by President Clinton to be the deputy attorney general, the first African-American named to that post. Prior to that he served as U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia. For additional information on this event, contact FBA Program Chair Michael K.
