The law firm of Miller Canfield announces that Shusheng Wang has joined the firm as co-director of International Business, expanding the firm's China and International Business Law practices. A native of China, he brings 13 years of experience in international business law helping Chinese companies expand to North America, particularly companies seeking to establish operations in automotive, engineering and R&D centers including Southeast Michigan.
At Miller Canfield, Wang will focus his practice on global corporate transactions, mergers and acquisitions, dispute resolution, China business counseling, and U.S. taxation of international operations.
Wang has advised on corporate structures, capital structures and exit strategies; developed networks for obtaining government approvals, business permits and licenses; developed and implemented global vehicle distribution component sales agreements; and advised on Internal Revenue Code Sections 351 and 367 cross-border stock transfers.
He will reside in Miller Canfield's Troy office. He joins Miller Canfield from Butzel Long in Detroit where he practiced for three years. Previously he was a member of General Motors Corporation's legal staff. While at GM, he primarily handled legal matters related to GM's joint ventures in China, including Shanghai GM, Jinbei GM, Guangxi Wuling GM and Shandong Dongyue SGM. He was also responsible for GM's global transfer pricing strategies and implementation.
He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and is licensed to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and the U.S. Tax Court. He is also a member of the Advisory Council for the Detroit Chinese Business Association. He is a frequent speaker at various seminars and conferences in the U.S., China, and Mexico. In 2008, he was selected as one of the ten Outstanding Overseas Alumni of Shandong University, China.
He earned his law degree from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, Missouri, his LL.M. from the People's University of China in Beijing, and his LL.B. from Shandong University in Jinan, China. He speaks Mandarin Chinese.

Honigman, Miller, Schwartz, and Cohn LLP is pleased to announce that Stanley H. Pitts, a partner in the firm's Labor and Employment Department, has been appointed to the State Bar of Michigan's District H (Wayne, Monroe and Lenawee Counties) Character and Fitness Committee for a two-year renewable term. The committee is charged with investigating and determining whether applicants for admission to the Bar meet its character and fitness qualifications.
Pitts' practice primarily includes defending employers confronted with federal and state agency charges of unlawful employment discrimination, employee litigation involving federal and state anti-discrimination laws, whistleblower claims, family and medical leave act claims and other employment related claims. He also provides counseling to employers on various issues and topics including disability-related inquiries, disability and religious accommodation, waivers and releases, reduction-in-force and severance agreements. His clients include national and regional employers.
In addition to his position on the District H Character and Fitness Committee, Pitts serves the State Bar as a member of a hearing panel for the Attorney Disciplinary Board, a member of the Labor and Employment section and a member of the Professional Ethics Committee.
Pitts earned his law degree from Wayne State University Law School and a B.S. in accounting from Wayne State University.

Foley & Lardner LLP recently announced that the BTI Consulting Group (Wellesley, Massachusetts) has recognized the firm as having the most attorneys named 2010 BTI Client Service All-Stars, and named Detroit Office attorney John Trentacosta to its BTI Client Service All-Star list.
Trentacosta is a partner with Foley and a member of the firm's Automotive Industry Team, as well as the Distribution & Franchise, Commercial Transactions & Business Counseling and International Practices. Jay B. Schreier has joined Beals Hubbard as Of Counsel, adding to the firm's already significant litigation and business expertise.
In this role Schreier is counseling individuals and businesses in various types of contract-based litigation. He is also charged with expanding the firm's litigation and business specialties.
In his previous position Schreier represented both individuals and businesses in the enforcement and defense of non-competition and non-solicitation agreements. He counseled both individuals and businesses in connection with contract-based benefit claims.
For more than 20 years, Schreier has counseled clients, litigated and arbitrated claims, and handled appeals involving a wide range of business disputes and business torts.Schreier graduated with a B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1982. David S. McDaniel has been named partner at Southfield-based Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer, & Weiss PC. Jaffe CEO Richard Zussman made the announcement.

Detroit-based law firm Bodman LLP has announced the admission of new local partners: Michelle A. Carter, Christine E. Ficks, Aaron D. Graves, and Catherine Schwedler Kokotovich.
Carter, of Bodman's Troy office, joined the firm as an associate attorney in 2006 after practicing law in New Jersey. She represents clients in matters involving complex commercial litigation, contracts, real property, construction, and employment litigation.
She is the 2009-2010 president of the Wolverine Bar Association and was honored as a "Rising Star" by Michigan Super Lawyers.
Carter is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Rutgers-Camden School of Law.
Ficks, of Bodman's Detroit office, joined the firm as an associate attorney in 2002. She concentrates her practice in commercial litigation and has assisted clients in employee benefits, ERISA, discrimination, and wrongful discharge cases.
She has litigation experience at both the trial and appellate levels and has filed briefs before the Michigan Court of Appeals, the Michigan Supreme Court, and the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Ficks is a graduate of Michigan State University and Wayne State University Law School.
Graves, of Bodman's Troy office, joined the firm as an associate attorney after practicing law with The Fishman Group, a management-side labor and employment law firm that merged with Bodman in 2008. He specializes in labor and employment law and has represented and counseled employers on a broad spectrum of traditional labor, employment, and employee relations issues. He has also presented numerous employment law seminars.
Graves is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Northwestern University Law School.
Kokotovich, of Bodman's Detroit office, joined the firm as an associate attorney in 2003. She concentrates her practice representing lenders in commercial loan originations.
Before joining Bodman she clerked for the employment division of the Wisconsin Department of Justice and interned with Justice David Prosser Jr. of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Dr. Zhiguo Du, James A. Sheridan and Laura E. Tedesco have joined Butzel Long as associate attorneys. Du focuses on International Business Transactions, Tax Planning and the China Practice. Sheridan concentrates his practice on business litigation and Tedesco's practice focuses on corporate law.
Based in Butzel Long's Detroit office, Du's practice focuses on International Business Transactions, Tax Planning and the China Practice. Prior to joining Butzel Long, Du interned at the Michigan Attorney General's Office. He was a teaching assistant at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in numerous courses.
Du is admitted to practice in Michigan and in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the American Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association. He is a native Mandarin Chinese speaker and is fluent in English.

Based in Butzel Long's Bloomfield Hills office, Sheridan concentrates his practice on business litigation.
Prior to joining Butzel Long, Sheridan assisted staff attorneys at the Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. and served a judicial externship with Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren.

Tedesco also had several positions with the DFCU Federal Credit Union.

Katherine Albrecht has been named partner with Beier Howlett law firm in Bloomfield Hills.
The announcement was made by firm president Tim Currier.
Albrecht has been a member of the a probate and estate planning group at Beier Howlett for seven years, and has practiced for more than 23 years in estate planning, taxation and probate matters, including litigation.
She is a past president of the Elder Law section of the State Bar of Michigan. Previously, she was an attorney with Butzel Long.
Albrecht hosts various community seminars regarding probate and estate planning matters. On Thurs., Feb. 25, she joined Lori Gilardone, RN, BSN, a geriatric care manager with Arcadia Care Management, to host a program entitled "Support for Caregivers: Finding Your Way Through the Maze."

The Michigan Chronicle has named Deierdre L. Weir, president and chief executive officer of Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD), one of its 2010 Women of Excellence.
The newspaper recognized 53 honorees at its annual Women of Excellence High Tea on Feb. 19.
