Obama to give Michigan spring commencement

By Corey Williams Associated Press Writer DETROIT (AP) -- Spring graduates at the University of Michigan will have their commencement address delivered by President Barack Obama, the university announced last Thursday. Obama also will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, the university said in a release. "President Obama has captured the imagination and enthusiasm of many students with his inspiring words of hope and change," university President Mary Sue Coleman said. "We are honored to welcome a leader of his distinction and look forward to his message. "We could not be happier for the graduates who will celebrate their academic achievements with the president of the United States." The commencement will be held May 1 at Michigan Stadium on the school's Ann Arbor campus. Obama will be the fourth sitting president to visit the campus, according to the school. Lyndon Johnson was the first and addressed the 1964 graduates. Michigan graduate Gerald R. Ford kicked off his presidential re-election run there in 1976. George H.W. Bush visited in 1991. An estimated 59,000 people filled more than half the seats at Michigan Stadium to hear former President Bill Clinton speak to the school's 2007 spring graduates. More than 40,000 people are expected to attend this May's ceremony where degrees will be awarded to about 3,500 graduates, the university said. Ticket information will be released at a later date. Obama delivered a higher education policy speech in July at Macomb Community College in Warren, just north of Detroit. While campaigning for president, then-U.S. Sen. Obama spoke in June 2008 to about 30 Wayne County Community College District students at the school's Taylor campus, southwest of Detroit. That followed a near-capacity campaign rally at 20,000-seat Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Published: Mon, Feb 15, 2010
