Panel finds Kilpatrick lawyer broke rules

DETROIT (AP) -- A former lawyer for ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick faces sanctions and possible disbarment after an attorney discipline panel found he broke rules in a whistleblower lawsuit.
The Detroit Free Press reports Monday the panel found Samuel McCargo committed five professional violations in the case and cleared him of five other misconduct allegations.
McCargo declined comment when reached by The Associated Press.
He was one of several attorneys accused of violations. In 2007, he helped negotiate an $8.4 million settlement in lawsuits filed by three Detroit police officers.
The deal emerged after a lawyer for the officers obtained text messages that revealed an affair between Kilpatrick and his top aide. The scandal ultimately forced Kilpatrick from office.
