Groups continuing soldier donation programs

By Frank Weir Legal News Area groups are stepping up the collection of items to be sent to troops serving overseas. The Public Service Committee of the Washtenaw County Bar Association and Thomas M. Cooley Law School are participating in "Operation IraqPac" while Washtenaw Court Services staffer Nancy Petoskey is planning to pack 12 cases of Girl Scout cookies for her boxes for the troops. She also will need other items and monetary donations to help with shipping costs. Her collection deadline has been extended to later in March. For a list, or for more information, call 222-3001 or email Petoskey at petoskyn@ewashtenaw.org Operation IraqPac is a semi-annual drive that collects items requested by the troops, packages them, and ships them to Iraq. All items collected go to soldiers serving on the front lines in Iraq, or serving in units that directly support front-lines in Iraq, or serving in units that directly support front-line service members. Items requested are not extravagant or luxurious. They are things of everyday necessity that, for whatever reason, are in short supply. For those interested in helping, here is a list of things service members need: Reading materials: magazines, books, sporting magazines, comic books, comics (Calvin and Hobbes). Hardware and sundries: AA and D batteries - premium long lasting. Bedroom items: foam mattress pads, soft sheets twin size, pillows, Head lamps, bed side lamps, flash lights. Writing materials: black ink pens, envelopes for writing letters, small pads of paper. Entertainment: playing cards, phone calling cards, music CD's (Country, Rap, Rock new releases), DVD Movies, video games and systems. Food items and snacks: M&M's (almond, plain, peanut), popsicles (unfrozen, sealed ice pops), Pringles, chips, cookies, crackers, trail mix, beef jerky, Skittles, hard candy, chewing gum, Tic Tacs, mints, licorice. Drinks: individual instant coffee/hot chocolate packets, anything powdered/presweetened to mix with water, Kool-Aid, iced tea, Gatorade, Crystal Light, flavored coffee, teas and mugs. Personal items: toilet paper, baby wipes,sun block (30+ SPF), sunglasses, Chapstick, nasal spray, eye drops, hair brushes, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste (small tubes), razors, shaving cream, deodorant, soap, hand sanitizer,foot powder, baby powder, T-shirts, sweat shirts, socks, gloves, insect repellent (with DEET), towels, wash cloths. Use sandwich bags to make personal hygiene kits. In each bag place a small tube of toothpaste, toothbrush, razor, small shaving cream, a bar of soap and some Q-Tips. The deadline for IraqPac donations is Monday, March 15, by 5 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at Muth and Shapiro P.C., 301 W.
