Judge speaks at MASAL Conference

The Michigan Academy of Science Arts & Letters (MASAL) presented Oakland County Circuit Judge Michael Warren as a speaker for their 114th Annual Conference on Friday, March 26, at Calvin College in Grand Rapids. His daughter Leah also participated in the presentation. Warren was invited to present his views on "Reinvigorating the American Spirit and Constitution through Patriot Week" before four different sessions - History, Law, Political Science, and Education. The Academy is an interdisciplinary scholarly organization established in 1894 to promote exchange among researchers at colleges, universities, government agencies, research and business organizations. Warren was appointed to the Oakland County Circuit Court in 2002 and currently serves in a leadership position as the presiding judge of the Civil/Criminal Division of the Court. His love for his country has involved him in shaping American education at the some of the highest levels in the state. Warren urges: "If we are to maintain our liberty in a free republic, our citizens must have a deeply rooted understanding of our Constitution, its generating history, and its underlying First Principles." Alarmed that large portions of students and the general public are ill-informed, Warren and his daughter Leah organized the inaugural Patriot Week in 2009. Patriot Week is anchored by the key dates of September 11 (the anniversary of the terrorists' attacks) and September 17 (Constitution Day, the anniversary of when the United States Constitution was signed). It is a grassroots effort to celebrate and honor the United States by commemorating its First Principles (the rule of law, equality, unalienable rights, the Social Compact, limited government, and the right to alter or abolish an oppressive government), key historical figures, founding documents, and symbols. It is intended to fill the void left by the commercialization or disregard of our existing holidays. At the conference, Warren and Leah spoke about the success of Patriot Week in Oakland County and explored how to spread its effect across the nation. "We are pleased that Judge Warren will participate in the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Michigan Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters," commented Julie Granthen, Chair of the Law Section. "His paper on 'Reinvigorating the American Spirit and Constitution Through Patriot Week' fits well in four of the Academy sections: Law, Education, Political Science, and History. After reading his book, I am especially looking forward to hearing him speak on the Constitution." Warren is the author of "America's Survival Guide, How to Stop America's Impending Suicide by Reclaiming Our First Principles" (Mill City Press; www.AmericasSurvivalGuide.com). He is an adjunct professor at Cooley Law School, where he teaches Constitutional Law. He is a board member of the Michigan Center for Civic Education, The New Common School Foundation, and the Michigan Council on Economics Education and former member of the Michigan State Board of Education.
