Federal judge to receive Civic Leadership Award
William J. Kohler, chair of the board of trustees of the Friends School in Detroit as well as an attorney and partner at the Detroit law firm Butzel Long, recently named U.S. District Court Judge Damon Keith, Sixth Circuit, as the selection for the prestigious Civic Leadership Award to be presented at the 17th Annual Wade McCree Jr. Scholarship Fund Dinner on Saturday, April 17.
"Each year Friends School honors individuals in the community who have distinguished themselves as civic leaders throughout their careers and through exceptional actions have benefited the common citizen. Judge Keith is one of those individuals well known in the community as a protector of the constitutional and civil rights of all people," said Kohler, "Judge Keith easily stood out among community leaders as deserving of this award. He exemplifies the qualities that are associated with the honorees of the Civic Leadership Award and I feel honored to present him with this coveted award."
Keith was born in Detroit and has served as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit since 1977.
In 2004, Keith was responsible for rallying members of Detroit's African-American business community to save the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History from bankruptcy, only one example among many rallying cries he has led.
