Foundation encourages kidney donations

In recognition of National Donate Life Month this April, the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM) is encouraging residents to become organ donors by signing up on the Michigan Organ Donor Registry. Nearly 3,000 Michigan residents are currently waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant while more than 106,000 nationally await their second chance at life. By registering to become an organ, tissue and eye donor, you could save and improve the lives of up to 50 people by giving your kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, pancreas, bones, corneas, skin and soft tissues after you have passed away. Organ and tissue donation is supported by almost all major religions and there is no charge to you or your family for donation. Organ donation need not interfere with funeral arrangements or alter your body's appearance. Although 77 Americans receive organ transplants daily, there are also 18 people who die each day waiting for organ donations. You can help. To add your name on the Michigan Organ Donor Registry visit www.giftoflifemichigan.org. As of January 2007, all Michigan residents who join the Donor Registry will receive a red heart donor symbol for the front of their driver's license or state ID card. If you have signed up previously, or signed the back of your license, you should update your registration to obtain the red heart donor symbol. Registering your name and talking to your family are the most important things you can do to indicate your wish to become an organ donor after your death. Joining the Donor Registry is legally binding and your family cannot overrule your wishes.
