Jilted wife wins $9 million against husband's mistress

by Correy Stephenson The Daily Record Newswire A wife has won $9 million against her husband's alleged mistress in a record-setting alienation of affection verdict in North Carolina. Cynthia Shackelford, now 60, became suspicious of her husband after a series of late nights at the office and suspicious cell phone and credit card bills. She hired a private investigator who discovered that her husband, Allan, was cheating on her. The couple separated in 2005. In 2007, Cynthia sued her husband's alleged mistress, Anne Lundquist, claiming that she broke up the Shackelford's 33-year marriage. Allan, an attorney, allegedly met Lundquist while providing legal services for a local college where she was the dean of campus life. Last week, a jury awarded Cynthia $5 million in compensatory damages and $4 million punitives against Lundquist. As originally reported in "The price of an affair? $9 million," by the Greensboro News and Record, Cynthia may never see a dime from the verdict. Lundquist did not appear at the trial and told the paper she plans to appeal the case. North Carolina is one of a handful of states that still allow alienation of affection lawsuits.
