Council plans tribute to attorney
The Family Mediation Council - Michigan announces "MEDIATION: A Love Story--A Tribute in Honor of Barbara Johannessen." Johannessen is an attorney from Rochester Hills who is known nationally for her many contributions to dispute resolution generally and to family mediation specifically.
Johannessen will be honored on Thursday, April 22, at the Peking House in Royal Oak, beginning at 6:30 p.m. with appetizers and drinks followed by a dinner and Tribute Roast. The event promises to be a thoroughly fun and entertaining evening with emcee Carrie Cole and comedian Lynn Liberato. Dress is casual.
Johannessen was selected a Michigan Super Lawyer 2007, 2008 and 2009. She is a SCAO approved domestic relations mediator and trainer for general civil mediation, qualified under Michigan state law and serves as an Arbitrator for the FINRA (formerly National Association of Securities Dealers and NYSE). She is a mediator for the U.S. Postal Service, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the Michigan Department of Career Development-Rehabilitation Services. She serves as adjunct instructor at Wayne State University and University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. In her spare time, Johannessen is also in private practice as an Appropriate Dispute Resolution provider, Conflict Management consultant, and trainer who is efficient, organized, and so upbeat that everyone enjoys working with her. She is often asked to help because of cheerful willingness to quietly but diligently serve the profession.
In September of 2009 Johannessen was honored as the recipient of the 2009 Distinguished Service Award from the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Section of the State Bar of Michigan. She served as 2006 Chair of the ADR Section of the Michigan Bar and as Chair and contributor to a number of its committees, activities and its long-range planning taskforce. In addition to her many Michigan services, she is a major contributor to the Advanced Negotiation and Dispute Resolution Institute (ANDRI) programs.
The Family Mediation Council encourages the community to share its enthusiasm in honoring Johannessen and her many important contributions to dispute resolution. Attendees can regsiter for the tribute and dinner event with FMC-Michigan by sending a $50 check payable to FMC-Michigan to Abrams Law Firm PC, 30300 Northwestern Hwy, Ste 112, Farmington Hills, 48334. Contact Nina Abrams at ninadabrams@abramspc.com or (248) 932-3540 ext. 337 for answers to questions about the event.
Tribute ads or "warm wishes" can be purchased in advance by sending art or information to Carole Church at carolechur@aol.com and payment to FMC-M, Abrams Law Firm PC.
The Family Mediation Council - Michigan is a non-profit organization that fosters use of facilitative mediation in domestic relations cases. Members are from throughout Michigan and include attorneys, mental health professionals and financial professionals. Members listed on the new Web site as mediators have met the State Court Administrative Office domestic relations and domestic violence training requirements. FMC-Michigan now offers new membership categories to provide more opportunities for people who are involved with or support family ADR practices. The new FMC-Michigan Web site lists the categories and details membership benefits.
