Military voting plan passes state legislature

LANSING (AP) -- Legislation meant to make it easier and faster for military personnel from Michigan to vote in elections is close to becoming law.
Bills approved unanimously by the state House on Tuesday are headed to Gov. Jennifer Granholm's desk.
The legislation requires that all absentee ballots be delivered to clerks for distribution at least 45 days before an election.
The bills permit the state to send absentee voter ballots to Michigan residents serving overseas by e-mail. Voters could print out the ballots and mail them to election clerks in Michigan.
Supporters say the plan would speed up the process of voting and increase participation in elections for military personnel stationed overseas.
