'Circle of Light' ceremony to take place on April 27

CARE House--the Child Abuse and Neglect Council of Oakland County will host its 7th annual "Circle of Light" award ceremony on Tuesday, April 27. This year's theme, "Lighting the Way for Future Stars," represents that the entire community is responsible for success of children in the system. "Every child can succeed if we believe in them and never give up on them" said Charles Ludwig, director of Advocacy and Prevention at CARE House. The program is scheduled to begin at 5:45 p.m. in the Commissioners Auditorium of the Oakland County Courthouse on Telegraph Road in Pontiac. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend this free event. Special recognition will be given to honor three "Circle of Light" award recipients for the outstanding contributions they have made in protecting children from abuse and neglect. In addition, "The Honorable Joan E. Young Award" will be presented to the Foster Parent of the Year. "The most important element in the success of a foster child after aging out of the system is the relationship created between the foster child and the foster parents," stated Judge Young. "While DHS and the court can provide services and make decisions about placement, the foster parents provide the day-to-day love and security these children so desperately need. If that relationship is sincere and long-term, we can expect the foster child to become a successful adult." One of the many highlights of the evening will be the opportunity to listen to keynote speaker Sean Blume. Blume is a product of the state's foster care system. He is best known today for his law practice in Mt. Clemens where he specializes in matters of family law including the representation of children in foster care. The program will include remarks from the president of CARE House, Cathy Weissenborn, musical performances by the Derby Middle School Jazz Band of Birmingham, and conclude with an illumination ceremony.
