Library to host Archer Exhibition

Dennis W. Archer, former Detroit mayor and Michigan Supreme Court justice, will join the Detroit Public Library Friends Foundation on Thursday, April 29, to celebrate the opening of the new Dennis W. Archer Collection at the Burton Historical Collection of the Detroit Public Library. Archer served two four-year terms as mayor of the city of Detroit (1994-2001), and was president of the National League of Cities in 2001. After leaving the mayor's office, Archer was elected chairman of Dickinson Wright PLLC, a 200-person, Detroit-based law firm with offices in Michigan and in Washington, D.C. "The scope of Mayor Archer's contributions, locally and nationally, to this city's development is an inspiration to our region for progress and growth," according to Patrice Merritt, executive director of the Detroit Public Library Friends Foundation. Archer gave his personal and municipal records of his term as Mayor of the City of Detroit, as well as his Supreme Court papers, to the Detroit Public Library upon leaving office eight years ago. Archer and his wife Trudy also donated to the Library $25,000 to process the collection, which will reside in the Burton Historical Collection located at Main Library. The exhibit will remain open through July 2010. The Dennis W. Archer Collection is publicly available for research. "It is my hope that this collection will inspire others to work for our region's betterment,' according to Archer. On Thursday, April 29, the library will host a celebration of the opening of the collection, as well as a special exhibition to illustrate Archer's contributions to the city of Detroit and to the nation. Archer and his wife have invited 13 other Detroit-based cultural entities to be a part of the festivities to bring a collective awareness to the arts in Detroit, and to demonstrate their commitment to sustaining Detroit's rich cultural legacy. The event will be held at The Detroit Public Library, 5201 Woodward, north of Warren in Detroit's Cultural Center. The event is open to the public, with tickets available for $250, proceeds from which will help to underwrite a number of programs at the collaborating arts organizations. For additional information, call The Detroit Public Library Friends Foundation office at (313) 481-1359 or e-mail at friends@detroitpubliclibrary.org. No tickets will be available at the door.
