Law school's Service to Soldiers program, OCBA offer free attorney training
With thousands of Michigan troops deploying to and returning from the Middle East, there is an increase in demand for attorneys familiar with the nuances of representing military clients,
Both Cooley Law School and the Oakland County Bar Association are dedicated to fulfilling that need and have partnered to offer a training session for Oakland-area attorneys on Friday, April 30, from 9-11 a.m. The training session will be at the Oakland County Bar Association, 1700 S. Telegraph, Ste. 100 (lower level, large training room), in Bloomfield Hills.
This program will offer participants information on the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), common services required by military families, and preparation of documents for deploying troops. It will also discuss Cooley's unique Service to Soldiers Legal Assistance Referral Program, which is a pro bono referral program recognized by the State Bar of Michigan.
Attorneys will be offered the opportunity to do pro bono legal work for low-income enlisted service members who often need help with family law, creditor/debtor issues, and document preparation, as well as a host of less-common requests.
Presenting at the training session are:
* Staff Sergeant Steven Schultz, Michigan National Guard, who will discuss preparation of wills and Powers of Attorney.
* James Carey, Cooley Law School professor, who will discuss the common needs of the military client and the provisions in the SCRA to be considered.
* Heather Spielmaker, director of Cooley's Center for Ethics, Service and Professionalism, who will give participants more information about the Service to Soldiers Program and how to become involved in providing pro bono services for deploying and returning troops.
To register, contact Lisa Stadig-Elliot by phone (248) 334-3400 or e-mail lstadig@ocba.org. Space is limited to 35 participants. Refreshments will be served.
