Jackson BPW highlights pay inequity between genders

The Jackson Business Professional Women (BPW) "saw red" on Tuesday, April 20, because they earn 72 cents for every dollar their male counterparts earn, a gender-based wage gap that's even worse than the national gap of 80 cents on the dollar. "Because of this, Michigan's women must work longer, on average, for the same amount of pay," a BPW spokesperson said. "April 20th is Equal Pay Day, symbolizing just how far into the year a woman must work to earn as much as a man earned the previous year. "Mayor Dunigan signed a Proclamation declaring it Equal Pay Day in Jackson." These Jackson Business Professional Women met at the Jackson Coffee Company where they handed out flyers with a packet of Equal and a Pay Day candy bar to symbolize the message. "Also, there was a coupon for a discount at the Jackson Coffee Company for women only!" Published: Mon, Apr 26, 2010
