The weather was perfect, the grass green, the fans ate the free food, and the Lugnuts were ready for a new baseball season.
On Wednesday, April 14 at 7:10 p.m., baseball and spring officially returned to Lansing.
"Beginning tonight," said Tom Dickson, co-owner with his wife, Sherrie Myers, of the Lugnuts, at the opening ceremonies on the diamond, "we will be known as Cooley Law School Stadium." Dickson then introduced Don LeDuc, president and dean of Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
"Also beginning tonight, the field on which we stand will be known as Jackson Field, thanks to Jackson National Life Insurance.
Although the Lugnuts, a class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, lost their home opener, 7-3, to the Lake County Captains from Eastlake, Ohio, the fans enjoyed cold beer and hotdogs, sunny skies, and the crack of the baseball bat hitting the ball.
The Lake County Captains are a class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.
The Lansing Lugnuts are owned by Take Me Out to the Ballgame, LLC., formed by the owners when they bought the Waterloo (IA) Diamonds in 1993.
The team played the 1994 and 1995 seasons as the Sultans in Springfield, Illinois, before relocating to Michigan's capital city in 1996 and becoming the Lansing Lugnuts.
