DNRE offers rock climbing, mountain biking and fishing classes for women this spring

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment is offering several classes this spring designed specifically for women. The classes --part of the DNRE's Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program -- include mountain biking, rock climbing and fishing. The rock climbing workshop will be held at the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), Camp Kiwanis in Mason, just south of Lansing. The class features the BSA's 30-foot climbing tower. A team of experts will ensure a safe environment for the climb, guide participants through proper use of safety equipment and provide instruction on the climb and rappel. This class will be held May 22, 2010 from 9 a.m. until noon. Women are welcome to bring daughters ages 10 and up. Registration fee is just $15 per person and includes all safety equipment. Register by May 17. For location details, visit www.chiefokemosbsa.org. For a registration form, visit www. michigan.gov/bow. The mountain biking symposium will be held at Stoney Creek Metropark in Shelby Township on Saturday, June 5. The day-long event includes a skills clinic, Mountain Biking 101, and maintenance clinic. Participants will need to bring their own bike, helmet and a sack lunch and should be prepared for the weather; the symposium will take place rain or shine. Registration fee is $20 per person. Register by May 31. For location details, visit www. metroparks.com. The two-session basic fishing class will be held at Gander Mountain in Lansing on Monday, June 7 and Wednesday, June 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Beginning anglers will learn about different types of equipment, how to rig a rod and reel, tie basic knots, choose the right bait, identify fish and find out where to catch them. Registration fee is $10 per person and includes use of all equipment. Register by June 1. Space is limited for these classes; register early!
