Court expands Electronic Notice Project

The Oakland County Circuit Court is pleased to announce the expansion of its Electronic Notice Project to offer additional e-mail notification of all orders and notices generated by the Case Management Office through cmo@oakgov.com to the attorneys practicing in Oakland County. The service was developed by the Case Management Office (CMO) in collaboration with the State Bar of Michigan, Oakland County Information Technology (IT) Department and the County Clerk's Office based upon the Court's requirements. Beginning Wednesday, June 2, this new service will provide attorneys who have a valid e-mail account registered with the State Bar an expedited service on the following: * Appearance Notices. * Adjournment Notices. * Scheduling Orders. * Order to Show Cause for Failure to Request Entry of Default. * Order to Show Cause for Failure to Make Service of Process. * Scheduling Order Reprint. * Case Evaluation Notices. * Case Evaluation Accept/Reject Notices. * Case Evaluation Payment Request Letters. * Order to Show Cause Re: Case Evaluation Fees. * Dismissal of Case Evaluation Show Cause Orders. * Satisfaction of Judgment Re: Case Evaluation Fees/Fines. The court will no longer send these paper notices and orders by mail, with a few exceptions such as for those attorneys who have no e-mail address, pro per litigants, and cases where manual intervention is required. All e-filing cases will still require attorneys to submit court documents through the Wiznet e-filing portal. "The court is always looking for ways to provide the best possible service," stated Chief Judge Nanci Grant. "E-mailing will grant attorneys faster access to scheduling information and orders, it will be cost effective, and make the process more efficient for everyone." Similar to the "Accept/Reject Notices" already sent electronically in case evaluation matters, the service will provide attorneys an e-mail with an unalterable pdf version of the document in place of paper. Documents will be e-mailed from the IT Department at 5 a.m. each morning, seven days a week, to ensure the efficient and effective transmission of documents to attorneys by the time they arrive at work. There is no fee required for this service. The electronic transfer of documents is less expensive than producing, processing, and mailing paper ones. Advantages of the electronic format are an expected annual cost savings to the court for postage, envelopes, paper, and processing in the amount of $17,000. For attorneys, the lengthy delay in receiving information will be eliminated and, once received, attorneys will be able to transmit easily and instantaneously to their clients. "I am very excited to learn that Oakland County Circuit Court is taking the next step in moving us to a paperless system like the Federal Courts," exclaimed attorney Michael Morse. "The new program is a much welcomed change to the way things have been done for the last 50 or more years. Receiving notices and orders quickly and electronically will save time and money for lawyers practicing in Oakland County. You can forward the notices right to your secretaries, clients or whoever else and save them right into your docket management system. No more lost notices or orders. You will always be able to find them at a click of the button. Way to go Oakland County!" In light of the elimination of paper notices and orders, attorneys are reminded of their responsibility to carefully manage their individual e-mail accounts by adding cmo@oakgov.com to their white list as well as monitor case activity. Attorneys must maintain current e-mail information with the State Bar and with the Case Management Office (or Clerk's Office). The State Bar provides Oakland County with the e-mail address of attorneys registered for Oakland County. The CMO staff manually collect the e-mail address of all out-county attorneys. If an attorney is not registered with the State Bar as an Oakland County attorney but wishes to receive the e-mails, or if any attorney wishes to provide the Court with an alternate e-mail address, they may make their request by e-mail through cmo@oakgov.com or in written form. Anyone with questions about the new service may contact the Case Management Office by e-mail at cmo@oakgov.com or by phone at (248) 858-0350. Published: Wed, May 19, 2010
