Escape to the Islands Without Leaving Michigan During Luau at Aloha State Park June 12
Visitors might mistake Aloha State Park for a tropical getaway on Saturday, June 12, as the park hosts the Fernelius Luau from 4 to 9 p.m. This event for all ages will feature the tropical sounds of the Petoskey Steel Drum Band, an official pig roast presented by Great Lakes Meat of Cheboygan and vehicles on display from Fernelius Toyota-Chrysler-Dodge in Cheboygan.
''With the Petoskey Steel Drum Band performing on the waterfront and luau aromas in the air, Aloha State Park - already a great destination, with its beautiful location in the middle of the popular Inland Waterway - becomes a little piece of paradise in northern Michigan,'' said Jeremy Spell, unit supervisor for Aloha State Park. ''We encourage visitors to get into the ?aloha' vibe with grass skirts, luau attire and festive spirits.''
The cost is $8 per person for the pig roast; children 8 and under eat for free. Participants should bring a blanket or chair to enjoy the outdoor concert. Encore Financial Group is also providing a bounce house, free for children from noon-4 p.m.
This event is also made possible by generous donations from Glen's, K-Mart, and Sears of Cheboygan. Aloha State Park is located at 4347 Third St., five miles south of Cheboygan via M-33, or one mile west of Cheboygan via M-212. The park offers modern camping on beautiful Mullett Lake, along with fishing, boating, swimming and picnicking. It is close to many of Michigan's famous travel attractions, such as the Straits of Mackinaw, and is at the center of the Inland Lakes Waterway, a 38-mile water trail that connects Crooked Lake to Lake Huron. Camping reservations can be made online at www.midnrreservations.com , or by calling the Department of Natural Resources and Environment central reservation system at 800-447-2757.
For more information about this event, the park, accessibility or persons needing accommodations to attend this event, contact the park supervisor at (231) 625-2522 (TTY/TDD 711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired), or visit www.michigan.gov/aloha.
All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.
Starting Oct. 1, 2010, you can show your support for Michigan's great outdoors when you register your license plate. Just check ''YES'' when asked if you want to support the Recreation Passport. For only $10, you can enter all of Michigan's state parks, recreation areas and boat launches. Your fee will help to improve forest campgrounds, non-motorized trails and local recreation opportunities, too.
