Getting married this summer? Apply online for a license
As wedding season kicks into gear, Oakland County Clerk Ruth Johnson is reminding happy couples who need a marriage license from the her office that they can easily apply online.
"It's an early wedding present - applying online saves them time, a little gas money and is more convenient at a time when couples are usually really busy with wedding details," said Johnson. "We actually had to have state law changed to allow online applications - it was one of those cases where the bureaucracy hadn't kept up with available technology."
Johnson launched online marriage license applications, recognized with a national award last year, in July 2008 through the Clerk's website at www.oakgov.com/clerkrod. Today, more than half of all marriage license applications are submitted electronically. For example, of 2,190 applications submitted to the Oakland County Clerk's Office from January 1 through May 31 of this year, 1,269 couples applied online. In 2009, of 7,265 marriage license applications received, 4,105 were submitted electronically.
The service eliminates one trip to the Oakland County Courthouse. Couples can apply online and then may pick up the license, in person with proper identification, after a three-day waiting period from the Oakland County Clerk's Office, 1200 N. Telegraph Road, in Pontiac. There is no fee for the online application. Marriage licenses cost $20.
State law requires that marriage license applicants:
* Be 18 years of age, or, age 16-17 if they provide a certified copy of their birth certificate and have written consent of their parent or guardian who must appear at the time of application with photo identification.
* Provide proof of residency with a current valid driver's license. If both parties are Michigan residents, they may apply in either county in which they reside. The license is valid throughout the state. If both parties are out-of-state residents, they must apply in the county where they are going to be married. The license is valid in that county online.
* Both provide a valid driver's license or state ID, a birth certificate or valid passport and their Social Security number pursuant to MCL 551.102.
