Supreme Court says Michigan AG's office can prosecute ex-judge

DETROIT (AP) -- The Michigan attorney general's office can resume prosecuting a retired Wayne County judge who is charged with allowing perjured testimony at a drug trial. The Michigan Supreme Court reversed a lower court last week and said the attorney general's office is not disqualified. Mary Waterstone is charged with four felonies, including concealment of perjured testimony at a trial in 2005. In March, the Michigan appeals court said there was a conflict because the attorney general's office had formerly defended Waterstone in a civil case tied to the same allegations. A message seeking comment Monday was left for Waterstone's attorney. A former prosecutor and two suburban police officers also are charged in the case. They say the lies were necessary to protect a witness. Published: Wed, Jun 9, 2010
