Youth plus abuse prevention coalition teaming up to educate stores about new FDA rule

The Jackson County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition (JCSAPC) has announced that they are teaming up with local youth to visit county tobacco and alcohol retailers this summer.
These visits are free of charge and will provide informational packets containing the required state legal stickers and educational materials discouraging the sale of alcohol and tobacco to underage youth.
Retailers will receive updated, legal age-limit signs; materials to educate employees about the proper sale of tobacco and alcohol; and information related to fines and policies regarding the sale of alcohol and tobacco to underage youth.
The law states that if a retailer does not display the proper signage, the owner, cashier and/or server can be fined. This fine does not include potential court costs.
In Jackson County there are approximately 175 tobacco retailers and 272 alcohol vendors.
Rhonda Rudolph, JCSAPC Chair and Jackson Tobacco Reduction Coalition Coordinator indicates that "these visits are part of a comprehensive approach which promotes services in Jackson County such as: providing smoking cessation resources to include the Michigan Tobacco Quit Line at 1-800-480-QUIT (7848), smoke-free worksite regulation and alcohol and tobacco prevention programming."
The Jackson County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition is comprised of community leaders representing local law enforcement agencies, courts, schools, health and human service agencies, substance abuse treatment providers and the media.
The coalition works to provide updated information and support to Jackson. In addition to the prevention of alcohol and other illicit drugs, coalition goals include preventing the access and availability of tobacco products to youth under the age of 18.
The coalition appreciates the continued support of Jackson County alcohol and tobacco retailers and the community to uphold the integrity of Michigan and Federal laws.
"Our efforts are funded through Mid-South Substance Abuse Commission and the Michigan Department of Community Health," a spokesperson said.
