The Ingham County Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Ingham County Bar Association, held its annual meeting on June 23rd at the Michael Franck Building in Lansing.
In keeping with its mission to promote access to justice, expand the availability of legal services to the public, support local charitable organizations, promote continuing legal education, and foster the honor and integrity of the profession of law, the Foundation awarded grants totaling $5,000 to four community organizations in the community. Each of the following organizations used its grant to fund specific programs.
* Child & Family Services - Lansing Teen Court program received $1,000 to actively engage and recognize teens who volunteer their time in the Teen Court program.
* End Violent Encounters, better known as EVE, Inc., was awarded $1,000 to continue funding of its Domestic Violence Support Unit (DVSU) services available to victims of domestic violence who reside in rural Ingham County. The DVSU provides access to personal protection order assistance, advocacy and referral services for victims and their children and works to provide a coordinated community response for the victims of domestic violence. The DVSU is a collaboration of EVE's Personal Protection Order Office and the Ingham County Sheriff's office. The Bar Foundation's funds will supplement funding from the Mason Area United Way.
* Legal Services of South Central Michigan was awarded $2,000 to assist low income owners or occupants who are in jeopardy of losing their homes due to tax foreclosure or due to predatory mortgage practices associated with or triggered by the non-payment of property taxes and mortgage foreclosure.
* St. Vincent Catholic Charities received a $1,000 grant for its Immigration Law Clinic enabling it to admit two staff attorneys to the Federal Bar, purchase federal litigation publications, and produce marketing materials for the clinic. These expanded resources will enable the clinic to represent its clients to the completion of their matters and to more aggressively pursue justice for this vulnerable population.
For the eighth consecutive year, the Foundation co-sponsored the City of Lansing's Martin Luther King Memorial Holiday Observance for students ($350). The standing-room-only crowd at City Hall enjoyed remarks from a variety of public officials followed by a catered luncheon for students of the Lansing School District, Lansing Community College, Michigan State University and community members.
The Foundation teamed with Cooley Law School and provided $246 in funding for high school students in the Lansing School District to view a Supreme Court oral argument.
The Foundation provided $500 of sponsorship money to the ICBA in support of its 2010 Bench/Bar Conference which brought together over 100 local attorneys and local judges on a Saturday morning in February at Veterans Memorial Courthouse.
For Law Day 2010, the Foundation again teamed with the ICBA and sponsored ($500) and hosted "Ask the Lawyer" a community service event which assisted 65 people with a wide variety of legal needs. Attendees were provided with a 30-minute free consultation with a lawyer.
Earlier this month, the Foundation was a Major Sponsor of Thomas M. Cooley Law School's 5K Race for Education ($500) for the eighth consecutive year. The race t-shirts featured logos of major sponsors including the Ingham County Bar Foundation.
The Foundation's Sixth Annual Memorial Golf Classic was held on June 14th at the Country Club of Lansing. Thomas M. Cooley Law School was the major sponsor of this event. In addition, Foster Swift sponsored the afterglow event by providing $400 in funding for the hors d'oeuvres.
The Foundation invited 32 people to become its first Fellows. As of today, 24 people have accepted the Fellows invitation and have committed to contributing a minimum of $1,000 to the ICBF. They will be formally introduced at the ICBA Annual Dinner on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at the Country Club of Lansing.
Max R. Hoffman, Susan Leduc, David Lick, and Peter Sheldon, candidates for the four board seats scheduled to become vacant June 30, 2010 were unanimously elected.
