Students 'Exploring Careers in the Law' at Michigan Hall of Justice

A group of 21 middle school students will get an up-close look at the legal system next week, thanks to the "Exploring Careers in the Law" program offered by the Michigan Supreme Court Learning Center. The program's appeal extends beyond Michigan; one of the students hails from southern California. Communities represented include Augusta, Bloomfield Hills, Charlotte, Grand Haven, Grand Rapids, Holland, Holt, Lansing, Okemos, Pinckney, and Potterville, Michigan; and Rancho Cucamonga, California. The week-long program, which begins on Monday, July 19, features a meeting with Supreme Court Justice Michael F. Cavanagh, sessions on legal dispute mediation and small claims court, and a tour of Ingham 54A District Court in Lansing. Staff of the Michigan Supreme Court and the Michigan State University Law School staff will assist with the "Exploring Careers in the Law" program. The program concludes on Friday, July 23, with presentations at 11 a.m. and a tour of the Michigan Supreme Court courtroom. Rachael Drenovsky, Learning Center Coordinator, said, "Students often acquire their view of legal careers from made-for-television programs that are not an accurate depiction of courts and courtroom conduct. Our goal is to provide students with a real-life view of legal issues as well as appropriate courtroom demeanor as they ponder legal careers."
