Center offers vital tools for mediators
In a world where conflict is resolved primarily through litigation and violence, mediation is a non-adversarial, affordable, and time saving choice. Mediation is a private process where individuals have the opportunity to brainstorm and negotiate a solution that meets everyone's needs. A mediator facilitates communication and promotes voluntary decision making by the parties.
The Oakland Mediation Center (OMC) offers the 40-Hour Civil Mediator Training to equip individuals with the skills necessary to act as mediators in facilitating the resolution of civil disputes.
Through a combination of role plays, demonstrations, discussions, and videos, this highly interactive training will take participants through the mediation process from the pre-conference call to writing the mediation agreement. The training will cover: Before the Mediation; Roles and Rules; Information Sharing; Noting the Agenda; Generating Options; Evaluating Options; Resolving the Conflict.
This training will be held July 29, August 4, 12, 19, 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Attendance at all sessions is required in order to receive a certificate of completion. The cost of the training is $995 and includes continental breakfast, lunch, snack and course materials. This training is eligible for the No Worker Left Behind (NWLB) funding and is listed on the Career Education Consumer Report (CECR) website at www.mycareereducation.org.
OMC's 40-Hour Civil Mediator Training is approved by the State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) and fulfills the training requirement to be listed on Michigan court rosters. This training is the first step for any individual who wishes to mediate privately or for the circuit courts. OMC provides practical experience packages (for a fee) to individuals who wish to apply to be on the circuit court list of mediators or wish to gain mediation experience.
This training will be delivered by Earlene Baggett-Hayes, a mediator, facilitator, arbitrator and attorney. She is a certified trainer in employment matters (including hiring, harassment, discrimination & diversity) and Alternative Dispute Resolution (Mediation and Conflict Resolution training, Peer Mediation and Coaching). Her law practice includes employment, labor, business, construction and contract law.
"OMC's mission is to help the community peacefully resolve conflict through mediation and education," said Bonnie Hanes, OMC Executive Director. "This training teaches powerful conflict resolution techniques to resolve conflict. By resolving conflicts, we are creating a more peaceful community."
For additional information about the training contact Camelia Ureche, general manager at cureche@mediation-omc.org or (248) 338-4280, ext. 211.
