State Bar of MI announces 2010 Election Results

Thomas J. Ryan won re-election for a third term in a highly contested race for the only open seat on the Judicial Tenure Commission. Ryan's three-year term will commence Jan. 1, 2011, and expire Dec. 31, 2013. He was first elected to the JTC in 2004, and he has served as the body's secretary, and currently serves as its vice president. The JTC is a constitutionally-created body that promotes the integrity of the judicial process and preserves public confidence in the courts. SBM Board of Commissioners: Five attorneys-Bruce A. Courtade, Robert J. Buchanan, Dennis M. Barnes, Brian D. Einhorn, and Edward L. Haroutunian-won contested seats in this year's State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners elections. All of them will serve three-year terms expiring at the close of the 2013 Annual Meeting. The State Bar Board of Commissioners provides oversight to the various operations of the Bar, such as finance, public policy, and member services. Bruce A. Courtade and Robert J. Buchanan won in District C, representing Clare, Gladwin, Isabella, Kent, Mecosta, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Osceola, and Ottawa Counties. Courtade is a shareholder with Rhodes McKee in Grand Rapids, where he practices primarily commercial litigation and construction law. He first served on the Board of Commissioners from 1998-2001 as a Representative Assembly officer, and was elected to the Board of Commissioners in 2004 and 2007. Buchanan co-founded the firm of Buchanan and Buchanan and currently serves as its managing partner. He has served on the Representative Assembly since 2002 and has chaired its Special Issues, Assembly Review, Hearings, and Drafting committees. Dennis M. Barnes won in District H, representing Lenawee, Monroe, and Wayne Counties. He is a member of Barris, Sott, Denn & Driker, PLLC, with a business litigation practice. Brian D. Einhorn and Edward L. Haroutunian won in District I, representing Oakland County. Einhorn practices with Collins, Einhorn, Farrell & Ulanoff and has tried more than 100 cases to verdict. Haroutunian practices with Haroutunian Licata Haroutunian, PC, in Bingham Farms, concentrating on family law, estate planning, real estate, and commercial litigation. Two attorneys won uncontested races for the 32-member Board of Commissioners. They are James N. Erhart of Petoskey, who won in District A representing 38 counties in northern lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula; and Julie A. Sullivan of Kalamazoo, who won in District F representing nine counties in southwestern Michigan. SBM Representative Assembly: Local attorneys won unopposed races in the Representative Assembly. These new members are: 4th Circuit-Jackson County Bruce A. Barton 22nd Circuit-Washtenaw Co. Robert K. Fergan 30th Circuit-Ingham County Monique C. Field Francis X. Hathaway Goldie Adele 44th Circuit-Livingston County Kathleen M. Oemke 56th Circuit-Eaton County Michael W. Thomsen The 150-member Representative Assembly was created in 1972 to increase the proportion of members who actively participate in Bar policy; it serves as the SBM final policy-making body. SBM Young Lawyers Section Executive Committee: Two attorneys-Carlos A. Escurel and Andrea C. Irons-won contested elections in Wayne and Macomb Counties. Their two-year term expires in 2012. Brent G. Seitz and James W. Low won uncontested elections in District 2, representing Oakland County, for two-year terms expiring in 2012. Erika Anderson, Bonnie R. Shaw, Shenique Moss, and Alexandra Nassar won uncontested elections in District 3, representing all other Michigan counties, for two-year terms expiring in 2012. The Young Lawyers Executive Council governs the members of the Young Lawyers Section, the State Bar's largest section. The section provides education, information, and analysis about issues of concern through meetings, seminars, public service programs, and newsletters.
