Phony prince pleads no contest to charge

PONTIAC (AP) -- A former Detroit area man who worked as an FBI informant while posing as an Austrian prince has pleaded no contest to nonpayment of more than $200,000 in child support. Fifty-year-old Josef von Hapsburg-Lothringen, formerly Josef Meyers of Beverly Hills, entered the plea last Wednesday in Oakland Circuit Court. He faces charges related to a long-standing debt to his Michigan wife and three children, whom he allegedly abandoned in 1993. A no-contest plea is not an admission of guilt, but is treated as such for sentencing purposes. Von Hapsburg-Lothringen's attorney, Joshua West, tells The Detroit News his client paid his ex-wife $43,000 nearly three years ago. He will argue for probation and restitution. Von Hapsburg-Lothringen will be sentenced Aug. 11. Published: Mon, Jul 26, 2010
