News (AP) - No quick decision on MI campaign-cash lawsuit

GRAND RAPIDS (AP) -- A judge is in no hurry to make a decision in a case that challenges some of Michigan's limits on campaign donations. Federal Judge Janet Neff in Grand Rapids says she'll hear arguments about a preliminary injunction on Aug. 30. Republican strategist Greg McNeilly had hoped for something before the Aug. 3 primary election. McNeilly claims his First Amendment rights are violated by the $500 limit on contributions to Michigan House candidates and $1,000 cap for Senate candidates. The law has been on the books for more than 30 years. In a brief order, Neff said there's no need to expedite hearings on a lawsuit that was filed June 28, five weeks before the primary.
