Detroit voters won't get vote on schools oversight

DETROIT (AP) § The Detroit City Council has decided against letting voters express their opinions on how the city's struggling schools should be governed. The council voted 6-3 last Thursday against putting the question of mayoral control on the November ballot. Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says voters have been denied the chance to decide what system works for their children. U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan was among those urging control of the district go to the mayor. The plan would have asked the public if it favors continuing to have an elected school board in charge of the Detroit Public Schools. Gov. Jennifer Granholm has put emergency financial manager Robert Bobb over the district. Granholm says voters were denied the chance to help move their schools forward. Published: Mon, Aug 2, 2010
