'No Fault Institute' to focus on McCormick & Titan
The Michigan Association for Justice (MAJ) will offer its "No Fault Institute VII--Kreiner Is Fixed: Navigating No-Fault Post-McCormick & Titan" Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 1-2, at the Westin Southfield, 1500 Town Center.
Coordinating the 2-day program full of sessions and speakers are George T. Sinas of Sinas, Dramis, Brake, Boughton & McIntyre PC in Lansing; and Wayne J. Miller of Miller & Tischler PC in Southfield.
"The McCormick decision restores the rights of innocent victims to recover compensation for serious injuries caused by negligent and drunk drivers, by returning to the specific legal standards that were enacted by the Michigan Legislature when it passed the current law 15 years ago," said Sinas. "In other words, this is not new law, but rather a return to the no-fault threshold passed by the Michigan Legislature in 1995. As such, McCormick has restored the delicate balance that is essential to preserve Michigan's model no-fault system."
In regards to the UM Regents v. Titan Insurance Company decision, Sinas said "By stopping insurance companies from denying healthcare expenses for children and the mentally disabled because legal action to enforce payment had not been filed within one year, the Michigan Supreme Court has restored 30 years of law that was previously discarded.
"In doing so, the court has protected the rights of children and mentally incompetent adults and prevented insurance companies from shifting these costs onto the Michigan Medicaid program and taxpayers."
Cost for the "No Fault Institute" is $340 for MAJ members, $240 for members 3 years or less of practice, $170 for sustaining members, $240 for paralegal members, and $360 for non-members. An optional hard-copy handboook costs an additional $50. On-site/door registration will be accepted as space permits. An additional $20 will be charged (including MAJ sustaining members).
MAJ has reserved a block of rooms at the special rate of $169 per night at the Westin Southfield. Call the Westin Southfield directly at 1-888-627-8558 to reserve a room. Reference the Michigan Association for Justice. Room block expires Friday, Aug. 27.
Refunds will only be issued if requested at least 48 hours before the program date; after the deadline a credit will be issued. Both types of cancellations are subject to a $20 processing fee and are only issued upon request with cancellation prior to program time.
Contact MAJ to register or for more information: (517) 321-3073 or MAJ@MichiganJustice.org.
