Free training for Ingham County's legal community

Local and national Judges, as well the Ingham County Friend of the Court Deputy Director, will be participating in Bright Lights for Families, a free legal training that will provide participants with information about the new Safe Havens Supervised Visitation & Safe Exchange Program, a/k/a the Oasis Family Center, set to open soon in Ingham County. The event, which is scheduled for September 23rd from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm, takes place at Thomas M. Cooley Law School's Lansing campus on the 9th floor of the Cooley Center, 300 S. Capitol. The morning will focus on parenting time and the effects of domestic violence on children. The afternoon will include a panel of local judges explaining how they will utilize the Oasis Family Center. Sample pleadings and orders will be provided. Judge Victor Reyes, 10th Judicial District Judge from Colorado and a nationally known speaker, will discuss domestic violence in custody cases, with practice tips appropriate for those representing either plaintiffs or defendants. Judge Reyes currently works with a Safe Havens Supervised Visitation & Safe Exchange program in his court. Local experts will also speak on the effects and influences of domestic violence on victims and children, focusing on promising developments like visitation centers and fathering programs. Professor Daniel G. Saunders will touch on risk factors and safety concerns for children, and Professor Alytia Levendosky will provide an analysis of intergenerational transmission of domestic violence. Attorneys who practice family law and criminal law in Ingham County are encouraged to register.
