News (AP) - State gets $21M grant to boost college access
LANSING (AP) -- Michigan is getting $21.3 million from the federal government over the next five years to help more people attend and complete college.
Gov. Jennifer Granholm said last Thursday the programs the money will fund particularly target low-income residents and those who are the first generation in their families to attend college.
Part of the federal money will go for a new unit in the Michigan Department of Education dedicated to promoting college access in K-12 schools.
Among the other projects is a website called the Michigan College Access Portal. It's scheduled to debut in September with information about applying and paying for college.
