News (AP) - Federal judge tells Detroit Schools to rehire officers
DETROIT (AP) -- A judge has ordered the Detroit Public Schools to rehire 226 public safety officers the district fired in July.
The Detroit Free Press recently reported that Wayne County Circuit Judge Robert Ziolkowski denied the district's request to postpone an injunction forcing rehiring of the officers.
Ziolkowski granted the officers the preliminary injunction last week, something the district appealed.
The district wants to replace the officers with lower-paid guards through a private security service.
Schools Financial Manager Robert Bobb has said the district will pay about $6.5 million a year to the contractor. The move is expected to save $4.5 million each year in the financially struggling district.
