Patterson declares Sept. as National Preparedness Month
Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and homeland security officials encourage residents, their families and co-workers to be prepared in the event of an unforeseen emergency or disaster. As a result, Patterson has designated September as National Preparedness Month in Oakland County.
"Quite simply, being prepared for an emergency saves lives," Patterson said. "The county's Homeland Security Division offers a plethora of information to help individuals, families and businesses prepare for a disaster."
The Oakland County Homeland Security Division and the Oakland County Citizen Corps programs are members of the National Preparedness Month Coalition for the seventh consecutive year. They focus their efforts on supporting activities that better equip local communities, schools, businesses and the special needs population to deal with all kinds of traumatic incidents including severe weather damage that may block roadways and cause power outages, as well as transportation accidents and hazardous materials incidents which may require protective actions such as evacuation or shelter-in-place.
Preparedness steps include putting together an emergency supply kit, developing a family or workplace emergency and communication plan, conducting drills and exercises, being informed, and getting involved by volunteering.
Patterson also praises and salutes first responders such as local police officers, firefighters and emergency medical services personnel for their dedication and heroism in protecting the lives and property of all citizens.
