Patriot Week drive to provide new and used movies to vets

In recognition of Patriot Week, Oakland County Commissioner Tim Burns is organizing a donation drive to collect DVDs to provide new and used movies for veterans, especially, those with limited mobility, who are receiving treatment at V.A. hospitals. Many veterans who have returned from Afghanistan and Iraq requiring medical care from the country's V.A. hospitals are unable to easily obtain some of the basic entertainment most civilians take for granted. The DVDS for VETS donation drive will assist with providing veterans who have sacrificed so much for the country with an entertainment option to help reduce the stress or tediousness of a hospital stay.
"This is a great way to let people thank our vets," said Burns. "Providing a distraction from a confining hospital bed or strenuous rehabilitation program can make a huge motivational difference for these American heroes as they fight to get back on their feet. Donating a DVD may seem like a small thing to do, but it can have a big impact on improving a veteran's hospital stay."
New or gently-used DVDs can be dropped off at collection boxes located at the following locations:
--Clawson Farmers Market - Sunday, Sept. 12, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Clawson's City Park (Intersection of Custer and Elmwood).
--VFW Post 4037 - Saturday, Sept. 11, through Friday, Sept.17, 12:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily, 2375 East Maple Road in Troy.
--Troy Police Department Lobby - Sept. 11 through 17, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (weekend) / 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Monday through Friday), 500 W. Big Beaver Road.
--Clawson Community Credit Union - Monday, Sept 13, through Friday, Sept. 17, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., 625 N. Main Street.
Donations of portable DVD players would also be appreciated.
Donations will be delivered to the Dingell V.A. Medical Center in Detroit by Commissioner Burns and volunteers at the conclusion of the DVD for VETS donation drive. Patriot Week (Sept. 11-17), is anchored by the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and "Constitution Day" which is the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, celebrates the founding principles of our nation and the patriots who have defended freedom throughout our country's history.
