News (AP) - Dykema attorney to present at two-day Connected Vehicle summit

The Connected Vehicle Trade Association and the Michigan Department of Transportation in conjunction with SAE International will host its "Second International Summit on the State of the Connected Vehicle" on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 29-30, in Troy. The Connected Vehicle requires strong relationships and coordination between public sector infrastructure operators and private sector providers (Transit agencies, suppliers, automakers, application providers, systems suppliers, commercial vehicles, etc.). This session will discuss the strategy and policy for these groups to realize this vision. These panels will discuss policy, strategy and schedules. On Day One, "Policy and Strategy for Deployment" will be discussed at various sessions throughout the day from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. On Day Two, "Near Term Business Opportunities" will be discussed. The discussion will concentrate on who will be spending money, where the contracts will be, what the budgets are from several perspectives. The business perspectives presented will be from automotive suppliers, government contractors, commercial services, connected services and content and development services. Day Two will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude with a "Wrap Up" session at 6 p.m. Paul Laurenza, a member in Dykema's Government Policy and Automotive Industry Groups, will give his presentation on "Regulation and Deployment" at 9 a.m. on Thursday and will highlight how existing legislative and regulatory models may provide guidance or insight with respect to development and deployment of connected vehicle technologies. So-called smart-car technologies include radar-enabled collision and lane departure warning systems already in use in some production vehicles. Proponents say future applications include helping drivers find empty parking spaces in urban areas and notifying vehicles when traffic lights are about to change. The commitment to these developments were seen first hand in Michigan when Ann Arbor-based Center for Automotive Research in 2007 launched its Connected Vehicle Proving Center to allow automakers and suppliers to evaluate emerging mobility and safety technologies for use in vehicles Key questions Laurenza plans on covering throughout a presentation include: * How does vehicle regulation intersect with CVT development and deployment? * What is the potential impact of regulation on the substance and/or timing of CVT development or deployment? * What recent regulatory experience may provide guidance for possible CVT regulation? The summit will be hosted by the Connected Vehicle Trade Association (CVTA) in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Transportation and SAE International. The summit brings together international senior executives and policy officials from government and industry with responsibility for the development and deployment of connected vehicle systems, products and services. Laurenza is an attorney in Dykema's Washington, D.C. office who represents automotive and other clients on federal regulatory and related litigation issues, including those before the Department of Transportation, Federal Trade Commission, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. His technical background, coupled with over three decades of legal experience in regulatory and litigation issues, allows him to deal with a diverse range of legal matters for clients across a number of industries. Laurenza has published and spoken extensively on motor vehicle and consumer product safety issues. He also serves on the CVTA Board of Directors. The Connected Vehicle Trade Association (CVTA) (www.connectedvehicle.org) is a non-profit business league established to facilitate the interaction, and advance the interests, of the entities involved in the vehicle communications environment.
