News (AP) - Hamtramck sues Detroit over tax revenue dispute

DETROIT (AP) -- The city of Hamtramck is suing Detroit for $4 million in tax revenue that it says the larger city owes it. The suit was filed last Friday in Wayne County Circuit Court and alleges breach of contract. The dispute stems from a long-standing agreement governing tax renenue from General Motors Co.'s Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. Hamtramck officials say Detroit owes it millions of dollars, while Detroit says it may have overpaid Hamtramck and wants the state to intervene. Hamtramck City Manager Bill Cooper says if the city doesn't get the money before December, it will be unable to meet its financial obligations. Hamtramck was taken over by the state in 2000 because of debt. State control ended in 2007. Published: Wed, Sep 8, 2010
