Community House to host Patriot Week event

The Community House will host the Patriot Week event "What is Patriotism and Why is it Important Today?" on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 9 a.m. The event will take place at The Community House, located at 280 South Bates Street in Birmingham. The event is free and open to the public. The keynote speaker will be Professor John Todd, a political science and business law professor at Rochester College and a decorated war veteran. Todd joined the armed forces in Vietnam as a pilot. In 1960, his plane was shot down and he was blinded in the attack. He received the Purple Heart for his injuries and the Distinguished Flying Cross for valor for bravery in a previous mission. He also has served as a spokesperson for President Nixon, founded the Vietnam's Veterans for Just Peace and has worked as a lobbyist for veterans in Washington, D.C. The event will include the Pledge of Allegiance, an opening prayer, an introduction by Patriot Week founder Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren, Todd's keynote address and a question and answer session with more than 100 Birmingham middle and high school students. "Professor Todd's speech will be inspirational and his interaction with the students will be a tremendous learning experience," adds Warren. "We hope everyone will take part in this event with a true American Patriot." "We are honored to have Professor Todd speak at this Patriot Week event," said Bob Gillette, member of the Patriot Week steering committee and founder of American House Senior Living Communities. "He epitomizes the true meaning of a Patriot, and we know his message will resonate with the students and all who will be attending this event." Created by Judge Warren and his eleven-year-old daughter Leah, the goal of Patriot Week is to renew the American spirit by focusing on education to revive appreciation and understanding of American history.
