The State Bar of Michigan Paralegal/Legal Assistant Section announces that three students have won $1,000 scholarships to help them earn degrees in paralegal studies.
Denise Gau, of Royal Oak, received an associate's degree from Oakland University's Paralegal Program, and has worked as a paralegal since 1993. Denise now seeks to expand her education, and obtain a bachelor's degree in paralegal studies from Oakland University. Gau is past chairperson of the SBM Paralegal/Legal Assistant Section, and currently serves on its council. She is also an active volunteer for the annual Comerica Cityfest in Detroit.
Ann Marie McMichael, of Clarkston, is enrolled in Baker College, Auburn Hills Campus, and is working toward a bachelor's degree in paralegal studies. McMichael is the mother of three boys, and volunteers for several school and youth organizations in Clarkston, including the Clarkston Community Schools PTA.
Denise Rafferty, of Dearborn Heights, is enrolled in Henry Ford Community College. Rafferty has been a legal secretary for over 30 years, and seeks to expand her legal knowledge and skills by becoming a paralegal. She has served on the Dearborn Heights District Seven School Board for the past six years.
Each year the SBM Paralegal/Legal Assistant Section awards between two and six scholarships based on demonstrated financial need, scholastic achievement, and career goals. For additional information about the scholarship program, visit www.michbar.org/paralegal.
